I have finished Paranormalcy by Kiersten White. Evie, a worker for the International Paranormal Containment Agency (IPCA) and has stumbled onto a mystery with her friend Lend. Also a paranormal, Lend is the only one who seems to be able to help with the creature that is killing paranormals very quickly. ‘Fire-girl’, or Vivian, has broken into the IPCA center where Evie works, and she has destroyed her home. Evie barely saves Lend and herself, but at the terrible cost of setting Reth free. There are strange happenings that occur to Evie upon arriving at Lend’s home in Virginia. It is made clear though that she is at the center of this, and the key to stopping it.
First, Evie has to meet Lend’s mother, Cresseda. She is revealed to be a water spirit, giving Lend his ability to shape shift. She talks in riddles and is never much help except for protecting Evie from evil faeries. Lend’s dad, David, is much more of a help. After scolding Lend and stitching up Evie’s cut, Lend explains the situation to David. He understands the significance of Evie and is slightly hesitant to help. But, he invites Evie into his home and makes her feel welcome, even though she is the reason Vivian is causing so much trouble.
Speaking of Viv, she is the ‘fire-girl’ Evie kept seeing. Vivian killed Lish and countless others, but appears to be just like Evie. She appears in Evie’s dreams and talks to her as if they were friends, and she even says that they are family. Not like sisters or anything, but two of a kind, and therefore family. Evie doesn’t believe it until Vivian says she’ll send Evie a message, and she does, on Evie’s communicator. Vivian tells Evie some disturbing things that leave her haunted and believing her newfound relationship with lend is killing him. Lend assures her he’s fine, but Evie still has her doubts.
The still most common threat of Evie’s life is Reth. He keeps showing up and hurting Evie and her hope for normal life. The burn on her arm, still on fire, and then he tries to drag her into a faerie door, where Cresseda stops him. Reth is pure trouble, and it is clear that he is not giving her up as easily as David thinks he will. I wish I could say David was right, but even after the prophecy comes true, Ii still feels like Reth wants her. But Evie doesn’t want him back because she’s already in love and not letting go of him anytime soon.
I feel a sequel coming on, but I doubt it will happen. I wish it would, because I love the characters and I fell in love with the story. I want to know what happens to them after it. What happens to Vivian, and Raquel? Can Evie sustain a normal life? Will she stay with Lend and David? And will she ever really know about who or what she is? I wish I knew the answers to these endless questions but, alas, I do not. I loved the ending; it never dulled or got boring, and kept me interested every single second I was reading. I couldn’t stop either, and I don’t think you will either.
Paranormalcy by Kiersten White
RED’S ALL STAR RATING: 4 out of 5, definitely. I loved the book. Even if it’s another paranormal book, it’s still good and different. It’s not all about wolves or vamps.
MASS APPEAL: Girls mainly. Guys could read this book, but It’s probably aimed more towards girls.
